-- skip to content isle of man photographic society a meeting place for everyone with a love of photography menu iomps reports results members’ galleries information rules for competitions constitution copyright contact us links membership presidents privacy policy map and venue history cups & trophies documents and downloads programme search login scroll down to content about us . . . . welcome ! you have arrived at the website for the isle of man photographic society, which contains lots of information about the club and our activities. we have two facebook pages, the public one is isle of man photographic society . the other one is for members, so once you have joined you would have access to that, where a lot of chat and useful information goes on. the details of all the meetings planned for 2018/19 are on the website under the programme tab. here is a summary : meetings : we are a friendly photography club. we meet at thie ellyn, the art society building, off withington road, douglas – which is down either of 2 narrow alleys behind the houses on the lower side of withington road, between woodbourne road and ballaquayle road. there is car parking under the thie ellyn building and on the various side streets around. see the map. meetings are held on wednesday evenings, starting at 7:30, and usually ending around 10:00. there is always time before the evening gets going, and at the tea-break, to talk to members, or ask questions. season : this year the season will start on 26th september, weekly until late april, with occasional outings and events during the summer months. our programme : so, what do we do? well, we look at pictures, photographs, and we talk. we aim to have sessions where we look at each other’s pictures, and sessions where we give demos about how to use your camera, how to understand what settings on the camera to use for various conditions and subjects, like landscapes, insects, portraits, how to make images better using photoshop, how to do quirky things like capturing an ice cube dropped into a glass of water. some evenings we have a speaker to talk to us, and show us their work, or give a (digital) slide show of something they are interested in, or somewhere they have been. some evenings we have a slide show of images sent to us from clubs in the uk, where the standard of work can be very high, just to give us some food for thought. and we compete with each other, where we submit our pictures to be judged and commented on, and given marks out of 20, so we can hopefully learn to improve. some competitions have no theme, some do. this coming year we have ‘scapes ( such as landscape, coastal scape, seascape, townscape, city-scape, sky-scape, ), manx sport, manx wild plants and animals (including in the wildlife park), and ‘after dark’, which could be eg night sky, or streets, or stage events etc. plenty of scope for interpretation in these choices. we have digital and print sections, and some members only ever enter digital projected pictures. there are rules about entries, on the website. of course we encourage members to enter the competitions, but there is no compulsion, if you just want to come for the entertainment and the knowledge, that’s absolutely fine. it is perfectly ok just to sit and look at the pictures being shown, admire some sometimes amazing photographs, and perhaps get ideas for your own work – of places, subjects or techniques for example…. we have two groups of members, intermediate and advanced, for competition purposes, so that no-one needs to feel that they are out of their depth. membership : the annual subscription is £30. junior members (up to age 16) are welcome and free of charge but must be accompanied by an adult. free membership extends up to 18 if in full time education. members of the public are welcome to attend meetings, with a guest fee of £2 per evening, and any such fees paid during “trial visits” will be deducted from the annual fee if you join. new members : will be given a very warm welcome, and advice and help on anything related to photography (cameras, controls, techniques etc) is always available. the isle of man photographic society is a photography club on the isle of man. it is a meeting place for everyone who loves photography. founded in 1938. affiliated to the photographic alliance of great britain through the lancashire and cheshire photographic union and supported by the isle of man arts council i hope this gives some information about the club – but if you have any further queries, please get in touch – using the “contact us” form available under the “information” button above or direct to the current club president [email protected] or the club secretary [email protected] we hope to see you at one of our meetings ! copyright please note, that the copyright of any image on this site remains at all times with the photographer © isle of man photographic society - all rights reserved. isle of man photographic society affiliated to the photographic alliance of great britain through the lancashire and cheshire photographic union site developed by grs
